Event Details

In the 21st century context of rapid communication systems, globalization, and international media, students are becoming acutely aware of the need for their contribution to our global community. News of malnutrition, maternal and child mortality rates, and the alarming epidemic reports of HIV/AIDS transmission despite the development of antiretroviral medication are just some of the humanitarian health crises that, while troubling, inspire students to turn their awareness into action. However, several grey areas in the realm of international health and development remain for which answers are not easily found: what are the issues that should be focused on? What are the ways students can contribute to efforts in the international community? Is our impact substantial? Can our contributions be more harmful than good? Are we sufficiently well versed in the social contexts and issues of other countries before we take upon endeavours of humanitarian aid and volunteerism?

INSPIRE aims to engage students by creating an environment where their impact on the international community can be evaluated through discussion with peers and experts in the field.  Topics will include:

  • Globalization
  • Social responsibility and ethics
  • Nutrition
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Disease
  • Environment
  • Primary Health Care

Keynote speakers:

Dr. Michael Seear (International Health, Medicine)
Dr. Judy McLean (Nutrition)
Dr. Michael Brauer (Environment)
Dr. Shafik Dharamsi (Ethics, Social Responsibility, Anthropology)
Sonja Babovic (Universities Allied for Essential Medicines - UBC)
